Collagen Wave FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is Collagen Wave?
Collagen Wave treatments use radiofrequency. It is a 'non-ablative' treatment, which means that it acts on the middle and lower layers of the skin. A hand-piece containing the electrodes delivers radiofrequency energy which heats the middle and lower layers of the skin. Radiofrequency and laser have been used both to tighten skin, however radiofrequency energy differs from laser light energy because radiofrequency is able to selectively deliver heat energy much deeper into the skin with little effect to the skin.

This radiofrequency heating process is aimed at tightening existing collagen which is the main structural support of the deeper layers of skin (hence immediate results) as well as stimulating new collagen to form (responsible for further improvements that can be noticed up to 6 months after treatment).

Collagen WaveWhen will I see results?
Immediate improvements will be seen. For most clients, further results will be gradual and subtle throughout a course of treatments. Your therapist will be able to advise you during your consultation on the results you are likely to see.

How much improvement would I expect?
It is important to have realistic expectations. This technology does not produce, at present, the same clinical changes as a facelift. In most client cases, fantastic results will happen with their first session and results tend to get better with each subsequent treatment.

How is the treatment performed?
The operator will apply a special conductive gel on the areas and will then slide a round, metal probe on the skin. A heat sensation is felt and this may vary from one person to another. Our protocol may vary from other units; we do not use aggressive protocol of anaesthetics, single passes and high doses. Instead we use special tips delivering lower energy with multiple passes, and are guided by results of skin tightening, redness and heat sensation.

Is the treatment painful?
The treatment feels fairly warm but pleasant and rarely uncomfortable.

What are the risks?
The skin may be slightly pink for a day after treatment, and very rarely some people may experience slight swelling, bruising or blistering. The treatment is not suitable for people who have pacemakers or any metal implants as the radiofrequency energy may interfere with the safe operation of these devices or implants. Skin colour makes no difference to the effectiveness of the procedure.

How many treatments do I need?
A course of treatments spaced 1-4 weeks apart are recommended - your therapist will be able to advise during your consultation how many you are likely to need. The results may last up to 2 years depending on age, genetics, extent of response and treatment. However, remember that your skin is constantly ageing, so it is envisaged that further top up treatments of one or more session as maintenance every 3 – 6 months may be needed, before you repeat the course again in 2 years time.

What are the costs of treatment?
The initial consultation is free of charge with no obligation to undergo treatment. Costs vary depending on the area being treated and will be clearly explained during your consultation. Please click the 'Prices' link above for more information or call us on 01788 553355.

How long does the treatment take?
Depending on the size of the area being treated and your response, the procedure usually takes between 30 – 90 minutes in addition to the consultation.

Is Collagen Wave suitable for everyone?
No. Radiofrequency cannot be applied to patients with pacemakers, metal plates or pins in the treatment area, severe heart disease, diseases of connective and muscular tissue or pregnant and breast feeding women. If you are at all unsure as to whether Collagen Wave might be suitable for you, a free, no-obligation consultation is always available.
